Benzema’s comments: After Vinicius Junior scored the opening goal against fierce rivals Barcelona, Karim Benzema increased Real Madrid’s lead. With 10 minutes remaining, he added his second goal from the penalty spot to complete his hat trick.
Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semifinal between Real Madrid and Barcelona saw Karim Benzema score a hat-trick as Real Madrid crushed Barcelona 4-0.
After Vinicius Junior got things started before the interval, the most recent Ballon d’Or winner extended his team’s lead over their fierce rivals. Eight minutes later, Benzema added his second from the penalty spot, and ten minutes later, he completed his hat trick.
The performance and the victory in the Champions League final helped Benzema win the Ballon d’Or, ending the 10-year reign of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the first player to do it since Luka Modric.
However, Benzema’s remarks following his hat-trick for Chelsea revealed where he differs from his former partner Ronaldo.
Benzema’s comments:
“I don’t play football to be the best in the world, I play for nights like this,” explained the veteran forward.
However, when asked by Piers Morgan what record he’d like to break before retiring in 2018, Ronaldo responded, “The most golden balls [Ballon d’Or] in football history. I’ll adore it, and I believe I deserve it. I am aware that I am among the best players in football history.
One of the fiercest rivalries in football is between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and all eyes were on Ballon d’Or winner Benzema to make the difference this Wednesday.
Although Barcelona was in a strong position in La Liga and had the home advantage, Benzema once again shown why he is still one of the best players in the world of football by scoring yet another hat-trick against Los Blancos.
