Simeone slams Real Madrid star: When Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals, it was a crushing blow. To put it mildly, it was a disastrous outcome for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, and it now has a formidable challenge in the second leg at Camp Nou.
There were big hopes for Real Madrid to win on that particular day. While Barcelona came into the game on the heels of a two-match losing skid, suffering at the hands of Manchester United and Almeria, their amazing 5-2 victory against Liverpool away at Anfield was still fresh in everyone’s mind.
Vinicius Junior was one of the players who underperformed on the day. Once more having trouble with Ronald Araujo was the Brazilian winger. And for him, things might have grown worse.
In the first half of the game, Vinicius collided with Frenkie de Jong and appeared to practically wrestle him to the ground. He received a yellow card as a result. But almost mysteriously, he voiced his objection to the choice and even brandished a finger at the referee. The Brazilian star had a narrow escape because the yellow might have converted into a red on another day.
In a news conference prior to the game, Simeone reportedly said Vinicius ought to have received a red card:
“Everyone perceived it the same way [as I did]. We pose the same inquiries to ourselves after viewing the photographs. I can’t tell you more about it than that.
It’s challenging to expand on what you’ve observed in a significant way. As always, it depends on the referees’ interpretation and how they evaluate the situation fairly to ensure equality.
Vinicius was fortunate not to receive a red card because Real Madrid would have been reduced to ten men for the majority of the game. They already lost 1-0, and if that had happened, things might have become lot worse.
One would think Vinicius will perform far better in the second leg at Camp Nou. The good news is that he frequently disproves sceptics.
